Welcome to Chi Auto Repair
The 2011–2015 Lexus GS (including the GS 350 and GS 450h) is world-renowned for its "vault-like" ride quality and sharp handling. However, as these cars reach the 80,000 to 120,000-mile mark, many owners in Bensalem and Northeast Philly start to notice a "clunk" or a loose feeling in the front end.
If your steering doesn’t feel as precise as it used to when navigating the curves of Bristol Pike or merging onto the Boulevard, the culprit is almost certainly the front lower control arm (LCA) compliance bushings.
In a performance-luxury sedan like the Lexus GS, the compliance bushing is a critical component. It’s the large rubber-and-metal part that connects the lower control arm to the vehicle’s subframe.
Its job is twofold:
Dampening: It absorbs the harsh "thwack" of hitting a pothole in Parkwood or Millbrook.
Stability: It keeps the wheel perfectly centered during heavy braking and high-speed cornering.
Lexus designed these bushings to be relatively soft to provide that signature "buttery" ride. Over time, the heavy weight of the GS—combined with the torque from the 3.5L V6—causes the rubber to crack and eventually tear away from its inner metal sleeve.
If you're driving through Bensalem Township and notice these symptoms, it’s time for an inspection:
The "Braking Shiver": You feel a slight "pop" or a shimmy in the steering wheel the moment you press the brake pedal.
Inner Tire Wear: You look at your front tires and see the inside edges are bald, even though the rest of the tire looks okay. This happens because the torn bushing allows the wheel to "toe out" while you're driving.
Vague Steering at Center: When driving straight, the car feels like it wants to wander, requiring constant small corrections.
Squeaking Over Bumps: A dry, rubbery "creak" when going over speed bumps or turning into your driveway.
A lot of dealerships will tell you that the entire lower control arm needs to be replaced, which can cost a small fortune.
